Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT), also known in Europe as "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles", is a US comic series which has been out since 1984. It was created and produced by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Peter Laird has since worked alone on the series after Kevin Eastman transferred his rights to him. On the basis of this very successful comic series, two carton series, three real film adaptations, a fully computer-animated cinema film and a less successful short-lived real series were produced. At first, a cartoon series based on the comics was developed which ran for ten episodes in all during the period from 1987 to 1966. At the same time three real films were produced at the beginning of the 90’s which, however, presented an adaptation of the comics independent of the cartoon series. After the first cartoon series production of a real series with independent contents was begun. This series was not so well received by film-goers and so was discontinued after just two episodes in 1998. In the years 2003-2009 a second cartoon series in seven episodes was produced. Furthermore, a computer-animated cinema film arose from this second series which appeared in 2007 as well as an 81-minute television film which was a crossover between the current and the first cartoon series.
