Howls Moving Castle is a 2004 anime film from the Studio Ghibli based on the plot of the children’s book "Sophie in the Magician’s Castle" by the English author Diana Wynne Jones. The film was directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film tells about the adventures of a teenager who is changed into an old woman and meets a wizard. In the background, both the book and the film deal with dangers and fears in wartime. The book, in the original "Howl's Moving Castle" by Diana Wynne Jones, was written in 1986 and was continued with "The Castle in the Air". It was published in German by Carlsen Verlag under the title "Sophie in dem Schloss des Zaubers" in 2005. The book deviates a lot from the film in the plot. In particular, the end is told completely differently in the book. The second volume was published in Germany under the title "Ziemlich viele Prinzessinnen" in the year 2003, also by Carlsen Verlag. In 2004 the book was adapted for cinema as an anime by the Japanese anime Studio Ghibli under the direction of Hayao Miyazaki. The German-language version is entitled "Das wandelnde Schloss." The film was first shown in Japanese cinemas on 20th November, 2004 and brought in 1.4 billion yen (about. 10.2 million euros) on its first weekend and is one of the most successful Japanese films ever after "Chihiro's Trip to Magic Land" and "Princess Mononoke" . For 9 weeks it occupied first place in the Japanese cinema charts and was in the Top Ten for many weeks after. The film could not continue its success in Japan in Germany. A DVD has been available since February, 2006. The first television showing in Germany took place on ARD on 24th March, 2008.
