Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a US science fiction film from the year 2011 directed by Rupert Wyatt. The film is based on the novel The Planet of the Apes by the French author Pierre Boulle and the various film adaptations of the subject. The film tells of the prehistory and backgrounds to how apes turned into a dominant species on Earth. In contrast to the first five episodes of The Planet of the Apes series, in this film the apes are not played by actors in masks but realised in a performance capture procedure. Actual filming started on 5th of July, 2010 and finished 17th September, 2010. Additional filming took place between 18th April, 2011 and 2nd May, 2011. The film’s production costs amounted to 90 million US dollars. On the first weekend Rise of the Planet of the Apes achieved a turnover of approximately 54 million US dollars in the United States and the film made number 1 in the cinema charts straight away. In Germany the film was at the top with a turnover of about 3.1 million euros in the first-week.
