Tales from Earthsea is a 2006 Japanese anime film from the Studio Ghibli. The film is mostly based on The Farthest Shore, the novel in the Earthsea series by Ursula K. Le Guin, which appeared in 1972. The film first appeared in 435 Japanese cinemas on 29th July, 2006, bringing in 900 million yen (about. 6 million euros). It reached number one in the Japanese cinema film chart five times in all in the first six weeks. The film could be seen at the Venice Film Festival on 3rd and 4th September, 2006, but not as a part of the competition. The German premiere in Japanese with English subtitles was shown at the 21st Fantasy Film Festival in a cinema in Munich. The film then began to be shown in German cinemas on 8th November, 2007. The film came out as a special edition at UFA Anime on 3rd March, 2008 and also appeared as a normal version on 7th April, 2008.
